Travel Guide
Every student traveler has questions. Below are some of the most common. A lot of these answers can be found throughout the Travel 101 sections and within our City Guides. If you still haven't found what you're looking for, send us an email through the Ask the Expert section at the bottom right of this page.
FAQs Q: How much money should I bring?
A: It depends on your spending habits, but we recommend $30-50 a day for meals, entertainment, and souvenirs. For more information about money abroad, jump to Money.
Q: What should I pack?
A: Pack light. Bring clothes, toiletries and documentation. For a complete rundown of packing suggestions, jump to What to Bring.
Q: Do I need a passport?
A: Yes. U.S. citizens traveling to Western Europe, Mexico and Costa Rica will need only a passport. Those going to other destinations may need a visa as well, and non-U.S. citizens traveling anywhere should check with their destination's consulate for necessary documentation (visit embassyworld.com for more info).
Q: Can I use my cell phone while abroad?
A: Some phones work abroad, but most don't. Check with your provider to see if yours will. You can also purchase an EF eKit phone card from us before you go, and use it to call home during your trip. Other international calling cards are also available to buy in all major cities around the world.
Q: When will I get my airline tickets?
A: You'll most likely be e-ticketed, which means you'll just need to bring your passport to the airport for check-in. Your flight times and itinerary will be available in your online account about two weeks before your trip. Because we do occasionally send out paper tickets, please make sure we have your correct mailing address in your Profile page.
Q: What do I do when I get off the plane?
A: Follow the crowd. You'll go through immigration to get your passport stamped and then collect your luggage at the baggage claim. Once you have your bags, you can proceed through customs and your EFCB Tour Director will be waiting for you.
Q: Is my destination on the euro?
A: The following countries currently use the Euro: Belgium, Germany, Spain, France, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Austria, Portugal, Finland, and Greece. (Note this list does not include England, Denmark or Sweden.)
Q: How long will my flight be?
A: Depends on where you're going. The average flight from New York to London is about six hours eastbound (a little longer on the way back due to the jet stream head wind).
Q: What time is it?
A: London is five hours ahead of New York. Most of the rest of Europe is six hours ahead. Beijing is 13 hours ahead. Sydney is tomorrow.
Q: Will the locals speak English?
A: These days, many people in big cities around the world do speak some English. However, you should learn some basic phrases in the local language. This will help with talking to locals who don't speak English, and everyone will appreciate the effort.
DOs and DON'Ts
DON'T... ...throw your trash on the ground. Respect the locals, and remember you're a guest in their home town.
DO...
...learn some of the language before you go. A simple "bonjour" or "grazie" or "wo bù huì shuo zhongwén" can go a long way to please the locals.
