Cairo is a very exciting city, one of those places where the ancient past and modern day come together. It’s a busy place, with markets, mosques, museums and a culture very different from what you’re used to.

    Guided excursion to Sakkara and Giza
    Go back to the beginning of Egyptian history. Start at Sakkara, site of the oldest Egyptian pyramids, including the Step Pyramid built by the pharaoh Zoser during the 3rd Dynasty (c. 2980–2900 B.C.). Continue to Giza to view the Great Pyramid of Cheops, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Visit one of the pyramids of Giza and see the incredible and mysterious 4,500-year-old Sphinx.

    Valley of the Kings
    Visit the necropolis of Thebes and the Valley of the Kings. Sixty-four Egyptian tombs have been discovered here, including King Tut’s.

    Temple of Karnak
    There’s nothing grander than this huge monumental city of temples. See the festival halls, chapels and gigantic statues of kings, and try to decipher the hieroglyphs painted on the walls.

    Temple of Luxor
    The mystical mile-and-a-half-long Avenue of the Sphinxes leads to the stunning Temple of Luxor, an amazing structure of royal courts, ram-headed sphinxes and pillared gates.

    Pass the Esna locks as you sail to Edfu, located on the banks of the Nile between Esna and Aswan.

    The 2,000-year-old temple dedicated to the Sky and Protector gods is the best-preserved in Egypt. Check out the majestic statue, wall paintings, sacrificial scenes, and inscriptions.

    Kom Ombo
    Sail to Kom Ombo, noted for its twin sandstone temple dedicated to both the crocodile-headed god Sobek and the falcon-headed god Haroeris. Ptolemy VI began building the temple around 180 B.C., but most of the work was completed under Neos Dionysos (80–51 B.C.).

    Sail to Aswan
    Continue on to Aswan. See Elephantine Island, the oldest inhabited area in Aswan. The island got its name from the dark granite rocks that look like a herd of elephants bathing in a river.

    This is your chance to enter the world of one of Ancient Egypt’s most powerful pharaohs. Abu Simbel is the site of two colossal temples built to honor the legendary Ramses II, who reigned over Egypt from 1290-1224 B.C. The massive statues flanking the entrance to the Great Temple, and the vivid wall paintings inside, tell the life stories of Ramses “The Great” and his wife Nefertari.

    Aswan High Dam
    This 12,000-foot-long dam, built to tame the Nile, is considered one of the greatest engineering feats of the 20th century. You’ll also see the granite quarries of Aswan, where ancient Egyptians gathered the materials needed to build their temples and sarcophagi. See the Unfinished Obelisk, carved directly within the quarry bedrock.

    A local guide will show you the Sightseeing tour of this amazing city, including the massive 12th-century Citadel. The impressive Mosque of Mohammed Ali was built 700 years later within the fortress walls. Head out on the terrace, where on a clear day you can get amazing views of the Nile and the Pyramids. Afterwards browse the goods at Khalili market.

    Visit the world's largest collection of Pharaonic art. See the priceless treasures recovered from King Tut's tomb, including his gold mask.
