Czech it out: it's more than goulash and gruel.

Ethnic restaurants are burgeoning in Prague, so your diet can stretch beyond standard meaty Czech fare. There are also plenty of restaurants and pubs that move beyond the frumpy dumpling approach to embrace top-quality local food presented in creative and international ways.

London, Paris, Barcelona, Nice, Madrid, Rome... the list goes on and on for this whirlwind tour of Europe.
print Beas Vegetarian Dhaba

This small vegetarian Indian cafe is hidden away in a little courtyard off Týnská. There's a simple menu of the lentil-soup-and-salad variety, and some outdoor seating. Breakfast is also available, and they have a good range of mouthwatering Indian sweets. Both chefs were specially recruited from Northern India.

Ariana

Ariana is a welcoming little place decked out with Persian rugs and photos of Kabul, with Asian music wailing in the background. It serves a range of unusual Afghani dishes, including ashak (a sort of ravioli containing chopped leeks, with a rich sauce of minced lamb and yogurt), various lamb and chicken kebabs and tasty vegetarian specialities, served with light, fluffy nan-i-dashi (hot bread) on the side.

U Modré Kachničky

A chintzy, baroque hunting lodge hidden away on a quiet side street, 'At the Blue Duckling' is a plush, old-fashioned place with quiet, candlelit nooks perfect for a romantic dinner. The menu is heavy on traditional Bohemian poultry, game and fish dishes.

Bohemia Bagel - Staré Město

When there were fewer choices in Prague, this expat establishment was more interesting. It still has its dedicated fans, who swear by the bagels, sandwiches, grills, American-style breakfasts and atmosphere. But with a more critical eye, the food looks a bit wilted, the toilets are sometimes scruffy and the internet access (2Kč a minute) is fairly pricey.

Bohemia Bagel - Malá Strana

Not everyone still rates this one-time backpackers' favourite and internet café, but it's OK for quick snacks and all-American breakfasts. There's a Staré Město branch, too.

Aromi

This gourmet Italian restaurant, specialising in cuisine from the Marché region, enjoys an exulted reputation and certainly the rustic setting is appealing. With chunky, polished wooden tables set well apart and a central display of imported delicacies, the place is businesslike at lunch and romantic in the evenings. Choose between the renowned seafood or rarities like Vincisgrassi alla Marchigiana (a rich lasagne).

Bumerang

Cellar restaurant and bar appealing to homesick antipodeans with didgeridoos hanging from the walls and Australian wines and beers behind the bar. The daily changing menu includes steaks, grills and 2-course set lunches with beer, and all go for a song. The vast cocktail menu features such Aussie tempters as Sex Down Under and Killer Kangaroo.

Bellavista

There are several restaurants in and around the Strahov Monastery, all aimed squarely at overseas visitors. This, however, does boast a terrace with amazing views and is upmarket enough to have served the Rolling Stones and Sean Connery. Hell, even the Italian food gets good reviews.

Café FX

Clad with chiffon and tasselled lampshades, this hippy-chic cafe at the entrance to the Radost FX nightclub dishes up imaginative plates ranging from Indian-spiced aubergine with mint yogurt to Thai veggies in coconut sauce. No meat in sight, and a good, healthy way to kick off the evening's festivities!
